Jonas Vingegaard says he is still aiming for additional stage victories at the Giro d’Italia despite holding a commanding lead in the general classification heading into the final week of the race.
The Danish cyclist has enjoyed an impressive debut appearance at the Giro, already claiming three stage wins and taking control of the famous pink jersey after victory on stage 14.
Vingegaard now leads the standings by almost two and a half minutes ahead of his closest challenger after overtaking surprise early leader Afonso Eulalio.
All three of the Visma-Lease a Bike rider’s victories have come on mountain finishes, and with several demanding climbing stages still remaining, the two-time Tour de France champion believes more opportunities could arrive before the race concludes.
The 29-year-old explained that while his team plans to manage energy carefully ahead of the upcoming Tour de France, he still hopes to secure at least one stage victory while wearing the pink jersey.
Vingegaard stressed that he does not intend to race defensively throughout the remainder of the Giro, insisting he wants to honour the competition with aggressive riding when the right opportunities emerge.
Although he remains the overwhelming favourite to win the title, the Dane acknowledged that Grand Tours can change quickly due to crashes, illness, or unexpected bad days.
The Giro also forms part of Vingegaard’s preparation for the Tour de France, where he is expected to renew his fierce rivalry with defending champion Tadej Pogacar.
The two cycling stars have dominated recent editions of the Tour, occupying the top two positions in each of the last five years.
Despite his strong advantage in Italy, Vingegaard remains cautious and insists the race is far from finished.
