Jon Rahm Refuses DP World Tour Waiver, Calls Conditions “Extortion”

Posted : 03 March 2026

Jon Rahm issued a forceful statement on Tuesday explaining why he has not signed the DP World Tour waiver, unlike eight other LIV Golf players who agreed to the tour’s conditions.

The waiver required players to pay outstanding fines, participate in a minimum number of DP World Tour events, and withdraw pending appeals. Rahm described these requirements as an attempt to “extort players like myself.”

Media reports indicate Rahm owes the DP World Tour between $2 million and $3 million in fines. The tour also demanded that he play six events, two of which would be selected by the organization.

Rahm challenged this, noting that the official rules only require participation in four events, a standard he has consistently met, including the Spanish Open nearly every year since turning professional.

He emphasized that players should have the freedom to choose where they compete without being dictated to by the tour.

Refusing to meet the tour’s six-event condition could make Rahm ineligible for the European team at the 2027 Ryder Cup in Limerick, Ireland. Rahm has been part of the European squad for the past four competitions, helping secure three victories with a personal 9-5-3 record.

By contrast, Tyrrell Hatton, who has played in four Ryder Cups, ensured his eligibility by agreeing to the tour’s terms. Despite the controversy off the course, Rahm is performing well, finishing runner-up in both of the first two LIV Golf events this season and looking ahead to the upcoming tournament in Hong Kong.
