Jon Rahm Kicks Off 2024 Season at Hero Dubai Desert Classic

Jon Rahm, the 2023 Masters champion, will begin his competitive season this week at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, marking a shift in his usual schedule. Historically, Rahm has thrived during the PGA Tour's west coast swing, where he secured nearly half of his 11 US circuit victories in January and February.

 

However, the DP World Tour's traditional Middle East season opener didn't come into his focus until his transition to the LIV Golf League at the end of 2023.

 

His controversial move to LIV put him at odds with the golfing establishment, but as he awaits an appeal over sanctions for playing LIV events without approval, Rahm remains eligible to participate in European Tour events.

 

This week in Dubai, he will compete alongside his Ryder Cup teammates Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, and Viktor Hovland, marking a new chapter in his career. Rahm reflected on his past focus on the PGA Tour’s west coast events, recalling his success during his university years and his consistent victories in places like Hawaii, Palm Springs, and Pebble Beach.

 

The shift to LIV has, according to Rahm, provided him with more flexibility in January, allowing him to play in events like the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. The 30-year-old seems content with his decision to join the Saudi-backed league, embracing the changes it has brought to his schedule and career.
