Johnson Wagner Casts Doubt on Tiger Woods’ Physical Readiness for The Masters

Posted : 26 March 2026

The golfing world remains fixated on Tiger Woods as the countdown to The Masters begins. Following his recent appearance in the TGL finals for Jupiter Links, speculation has intensified regarding his fitness. While fans hoped the indoor match served as a successful fitness test, analyst Johnson Wagner offered a grim assessment of the legend's chances.

Wagner expressed significant skepticism during a recent CBS Sports broadcast. He argued that the physical demands of Augusta National are far greater than a simulated environment. The 15-time major winner has not competed in a major since the 2024 Open Championship. Wagner noted that walking the steep elevation changes of the Georgia course remains a monumental task for Woods' surgically repaired body.

According to Wagner, finishing all four rounds seems unlikely under current tournament conditions. He suggested that a withdrawal is more probable than Woods completing 72 holes. The analyst further claimed it would be a "miracle" if the veteran golfer managed to make the cut. These comments highlight the ongoing concern regarding Woods’ durability in high-pressure, four-day events.

Beyond The Masters, the conversation has shifted toward Woods’ potential involvement in the PGA Tour Champions. Having turned 50 in December, Woods is now eligible for the senior circuit. This tour allows the use of carts and features shorter, three-round tournaments. Many experts believe this transition could help him maintain a competitive edge without the extreme physical toll of the primary PGA Tour.

However, Wagner revealed a deeper anxiety within the sport regarding the future of the senior circuit. He mentioned that there is significant chatter about the survival of the PGA Tour Champions if Woods declines to participate. There are fears that the tour’s long-term viability depends heavily on his star power. Woods has yet to confirm his schedule for the remainder of the 2026 season.

The golf community now waits to see if Woods will defy the critics once again. A strong showing at Augusta would provide a massive boost to the PGA Tour’s momentum. Conversely, a struggle could accelerate discussions about his permanent transition to senior golf.
