Jofra Archer Signs One-Year Sussex Extension to Stay at Hove Until 2027

Posted : 18 October 2026

England fast bowler Jofra Archer has signed a one-year contract extension with Sussex, securing his future at the county through the 2027 season. The 31-year-old's new deal extends his association with the club to 12 seasons since making his debut in 2016.

Archer has taken 223 first-class wickets for Sussex at an average of 25.17. His career at Hove has included periods of outstanding fast bowling, alongside several injury setbacks that disrupted his availability across formats.

The England international missed four years of red-ball cricket before returning to Sussex in June 2025. He subsequently made his first Test appearance since 2021 when England faced India in July 2025, marking an important milestone in his recovery.

Archer was also fit for England's 2025-26 Ashes tour of Australia. He claimed nine wickets during the series before suffering a side strain in the third Test in Adelaide, forcing another interruption to his campaign.

The fast bowler recovered to deliver an impressive run of performances against New Zealand and Pakistan during the summer of 2026, taking 23 wickets across five Test matches. His form reinforced his value to England's attack and underlined the importance of managing his workload carefully.

Speaking after signing the extension, Archer said his connection with Sussex made the decision straightforward.

"I have always felt at home at Sussex since making my first-class debut in 2016, and it was an easy decision to stay here for a further year," he said in a statement published on the club's website.

Sussex's incoming head coach, Matt Walker, welcomed the agreement and described Archer as a world-class fast bowler who brings something special to the club. He stressed that retaining a player of Archer's quality was important as Sussex work to build a competitive team across all formats.

The new county agreement follows another significant development in Archer's international career. The England and Wales Cricket Board recently awarded him a two-year central contract covering the 2026-27 period, reflecting his importance to the national side.

Archer is expected to balance his Sussex commitments with England's international schedule. The county confirmed that his availability next summer will depend on his duties with the national team.

The fast bowler remains a key figure in England's plans across formats. His ability to generate pace and challenge batters with bounce makes him a valuable option, particularly in Test cricket, where England will need experienced bowlers for demanding overseas assignments.

His latest extension also maintains a long-standing connection with Sussex, where he developed before establishing himself as an international star. The club will hope to benefit from his experience whenever his schedule allows him to feature during the 2027 season.
