JJ Spaun Seals First Major with Sensational 65-Foot Putt at US Open

JJ Spaun etched his name into golf history on Sunday by winning his first major title at the US Open, delivering a stunning 65-foot birdie putt on the final hole to secure victory. Playing at Oakmont, Spaun overcame a shaky start to card a two-over 72 and finish two strokes ahead of Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre.

 

 The triumph was made all the more memorable by the drama of the finish, with Spaun’s extraordinary putt at the 72nd hole sealing a moment he described as unforgettable.

 

After bogeying five of the first six holes, Spaun rallied with four birdies in his final seven. A birdie on the par-four 17th gave him the outright lead, and the fairytale finish was completed with his long-range birdie on 18.

 

The American, who previously won the Texas Open in 2022, had come close to major success earlier this year with strong showings at the Cognizant Classic and Players Championship. His final round comeback placed him among greats like Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, who also finished US Opens with back-to-back birdies.

 

Spaun’s resilience shone through both in the round and in his broader career. Diagnosed in 2018 with an incorrect form of diabetes, he struggled with ineffective treatment for years before receiving the correct diagnosis in 2021.

 

 Even on the morning of his final round, chaos surrounded him as he tended to a sick daughter and had to collect medication. Despite those hurdles and a rain delay, Spaun reset mentally and clawed his way back into contention with determination.

 

The dramatic win left even his playing partner Viktor Hovland in awe. Hovland, who finished third, praised the comeback and the improbable final putt, calling it “absolutely filthy.” Spaun now joins an elite list of major winners and aims to build on this momentum, having proven that perseverance, belief, and a bit of magic can lead to the most unforgettable of sporting triumphs.
