JJ Spaun Claims BMW PGA Championship After Stunning Late Surge

JJ Spaun produced a stunning late charge to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday, claiming his second DP World Tour title and his first Rolex Series victory. The American closed with a five-under-par 67 after making birdies on four of his final five holes to finish at 17 under par.

The 2025 US Open champion began the final round just one shot behind the leader but appeared to be losing ground during the middle of his round. Spaun was only one under for the day after 13 holes before a run of three consecutive birdies from the 14th dramatically changed the contest.

He added another birdie at the 18th to establish a two-shot lead and put the pressure on the players chasing him. Manuel Elvira briefly joined Spaun at the top after eagling the 17th, but the Spaniard's double bogey on the final hole ended his hopes of securing his first DP World Tour title.

Elvira eventually finished in a four-way tie for second at 15 under alongside Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Aaron Rai. McIlroy mounted a late challenge of his own but could not close the two-shot gap, finishing with a share of second place.

Spaun's victory also placed him in the record books as only the third American to win the BMW PGA Championship, following Arnold Palmer and Billy Horschel. He became the first player to win the tournament on his debut since Byeong Hun An in 2015.

The victory carried extra significance for Spaun after he was left out of the United States Presidents Cup team for next week's event at Medinah. He acknowledged that the disappointment provided additional motivation during his week at Wentworth.

Spaun said he played with a "huge chip on my shoulder" because he wanted to demonstrate that he deserved a place on the American team. He added that he was proud of his performance and would be watching the Presidents Cup while wishing his teammates well.

The win gave Spaun a $1.53 million share of the $9 million purse and strengthened his position after his breakthrough major victory at the 2025 US Open.
