Jimoh Leads Lekki Scrabble Classics Field After 10 Wins on Day One

Top-ranked Abdulmumeen Jimoh leads Division A at the 2026 Lekki Scrabble Classics after winning 10 of his opening 11 games on the first day of the competition. He finished the opening 11 rounds with a cumulative score of +1,029 points in the 18-round championship.

Jimoh suffered his only defeat in Round Nine, when Olufemi Gbadebo ended his winning run with a 462-376 victory. The defending champion responded by winning his final two games to retain his position at the top of the standings.

Anthony Odok occupies second place after recording eight wins and three defeats. Eight other players also finished with the same 8-3 record, with cumulative points separating them on the Division A leaderboard.

African champion Oluwatimilehin Doko remains among the leading contenders after ending Day One with seven wins and four defeats. The closely packed standings leave the title race open heading into the final seven rounds.

In Division B, Babatunde Adeagbo also produced a strong opening-day display. He won 10 of his 11 games to take the lead in a field of more than 100 players.

The tournament also featured a newly introduced children’s category. The section gives young players an opportunity to experience organised competitive Scrabble and learn the rules and discipline of the game.

The U-12 category was introduced for the 2026 Classics as part of the Lekki Scrabble Club’s wider youth development programme. Club president Samuel Anikoh previously said the initiative was designed to provide young players with early competitive experience and help develop the next generation of Nigerian Scrabble talent.

Anikoh described the opening day as successful despite a delayed start linked to Lagos State’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise. He also praised the camaraderie among players and the interest generated by the children’s competition.

The 2026 Lekki Scrabble Classics is the club’s annual flagship tournament. The competition features a top prize of $1,000, with the final seven rounds scheduled for Sunday to determine the winners across the divisions.
