Lekki Scrabble Classics: Jimoh Sets Early Pace as Day 1 Reaches Climax

Abdulmumeen Jimoh underlined his status as the top-ranked player at the 2026 Lekki Scrabble Classics, finishing Day 1 at the top of Division A after an impressive 10 wins from 11 rounds.

Jimoh accumulated a cumulative score of +1,029 points to establish an early advantage in the 18-round premium championship, with his only defeat coming in Round 9.

Olufemi Gbadebo ended Jimoh’s winning run by defeating the tournament favourite 462-376. Jimoh quickly recovered, however, claiming victories in the final two rounds of the day.

Anthony Odok occupies second position, leading a group of eight players who finished with eight wins and three defeats. Cumulative points separate the closely matched contenders.

African champion Oluwatimilehin Doko is among the next group of players, having recorded seven victories and four defeats to remain within reach of the leading pack.

In Division B, Babatunde Adeagbo emerged as the early leader after securing 10 wins from 11 games, putting him at the top of a highly competitive field of 111 players.

The inaugural Children’s Category was also a notable feature of the championship, with young players taking part in the newly introduced competition in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

President of Lekki Scrabble Club, Engr. Samuel Anikoh, described the opening day as encouraging despite the delayed start caused by the Lagos State monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

“Day One of the Lekki Scrabble Classics has been really good despite the late start due to the Lagos State monthly environmental exercise, but overall it has been good,” he said.

Anikoh noted that the tournament had provided an opportunity for players to build camaraderie while maintaining a strong competitive edge.

He was particularly pleased with the participation of children, saying the new category had allowed them to learn the rules and experience organised Scrabble in a comfortable environment.

“It’s really interesting seeing the kids having fun while playing. They got to understand the rules of organised Scrabble,” he said.

The club president added that the intensity of the competition, including games streamed online, showed that players were determined to challenge for the top prize.

“I’m looking forward to Day Two for even more excitement as we round up the event,” he said.

Seven rounds of games will be played today, Sunday, as the prestigious championship concludes.
