Ecuador's Jhonatan Narvaez claimed a thrilling victory in the fifth stage of the Tour Down Under, surging up the challenging Willunga Hill to secure his first win of the race. Narvaez, riding for UAE Team Emirates, made his decisive move near the summit of the 3.3 km climb, leaving behind Britain’s Oscar Onley and New Zealand’s Finn Fisher-Black.
The win not only earned him the stage victory but also gave him valuable bonus seconds, putting him nine seconds ahead of Spain's Javier Romo in the general classification.
With the victory, Narvaez now has a strong advantage heading into Sunday’s sprint stage around Adelaide’s streets, and a safe finish will make him the first Ecuadorian to win the Tour Down Under.
Reflecting on his triumph, Narvaez acknowledged the pressure of being the favorite but expressed satisfaction in overcoming the challenge. “It was not easy when everyone is telling you that you are the favourite, but in the end we made it,” he said, noting his determination after finishing second last year to Welshman Stephen Williams.
Despite Narvaez’s success, Romo made an audacious attempt to retain the leader’s jersey with a solo attack early in the climb. However, his effort was short-lived, as he was caught with 700 meters to go, ultimately finishing fifth and losing the lead.
Romo admitted that the sprint finish would be out of his reach, acknowledging that his lack of sprinting speed made it impossible to challenge the faster riders. Meanwhile, the King of the Mountain title went to Fergus Browning, who finished with 58 points, ahead of Switzerland’s Mauro Schmid with 27.
