Jhonatan Narváez Wins Giro d’Italia Stage 4 as Giulio Ciccone Takes Race Lead

Posted : 13 May 2026

Jhonatan Narváez secured a strong stage victory on Tuesday in the fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia, powering to a sprint finish in Cosenza after a demanding 138km route through Calabria. His win brought relief to UAE Team Emirates after a difficult start to the race marked by crashes and withdrawals.

The stage featured a decisive selection on the climb of Cozzo Tunno, where the main sprinters were dropped before the peloton reached the finish. Narváez held his position in the reduced group and produced a perfectly timed sprint to claim the win, marking an important result for his team.

UAE Team Emirates have been heavily impacted by setbacks early in the race, including a crash that forced multiple riders out. Among them, British rider Adam Yates suffered a concussion, Marc Soler broke his pelvis, and Jay Vine sustained a fractured elbow, significantly weakening the squad.

After the finish, Narváez expressed satisfaction with the result and dedicated the victory to his teammates who were forced to abandon the race. He also highlighted his return to form following injury earlier in the season, making the win even more meaningful.

Behind him, Italian rider Giulio Ciccone finished third on the stage but gained enough time to move into the overall race lead. His performance saw him take the coveted maglia rosa on home soil for the first time in his career, a milestone he described as a childhood dream fulfilled.

Ciccone now leads the general classification by four seconds over teammate Jan Christen, who moved into the white jersey for best young rider after a late attack in the final kilometres. Christen’s strong ride also elevated him to second overall.

The stage was marked by a punishing pace that eliminated several prominent sprinters early, including Arnaud De Lie and Kaden Groves, while others such as Jonathan Milan, Paul Magnier, and Tobias Lund Andresen were also dropped on the climb. Even the early race leader Thomas Silva lost contact on the ascent, surrendering the pink jersey in the process.

Ciccone’s rise to the top of the standings comes after years of near-misses and personal setbacks, including a serious crash last season. His emotional reaction reflected the significance of finally wearing the pink jersey at the Giro d’Italia.

The race continues on Wednesday with a hilly fifth stage from Praia a Mare to Potenza, where further changes in the general classification are expected.
