Javier Romo Claims First UCI World Tour Victory, Takes Lead in Tour Down Under

Posted : 24 January 2025

Spain’s Javier Romo claimed his first UCI World Tour victory by winning the third stage of the Tour Down Under on Thursday, following a bold attack after the final climb. The 25-year-old Movistar Team rider surged ahead five kilometers from the finish in Uraidla, holding off a fast-approaching pack to secure the win and the leader’s ochre jersey.

Romo finished the stage five seconds ahead of Colombian Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates) and New Zealander Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe).

The victory marks a significant milestone in Romo’s career, as he now leads the general classification by eight seconds over Narvaez, with Austria’s Patrick Konrad in third place. With three stages remaining, Romo’s confidence is high ahead of the 157.2 km fourth stage to Victor Harbour on Friday.

Reflecting on his success, Romo said, “This is so important for me. I worked hard for the Tour Down Under this winter and could imagine this day.”

The stage was a tough one for sprinters, with overnight leader Sam Welsford (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) finishing 108th and dropping to 105th overall, 12.3 seconds behind Romo. Defending champion Stephen Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) was involved in a crash during the feed zone but managed to finish 28th.

He is expected to undergo a medical assessment. Spaniard Martin Lopez (XDS Astana) also suffered a crash 15 km from the finish, hitting the tarmac hard and abandoning the race for hospital checks.

In other developments, Australian rider Fergus Browning (ARA Australian Team) extended his lead in the King of the Mountain competition, taking two of the three KOM stages on Thursday, now sitting on 43 points. This adds to his breakout success in the competition as he continues to impress in the early stages of the tour.
