Jareb School Dominates Ecobank Chess Championship, Sweeps All Medals

Posted : 27 June 2025

Victor Ajayi of Jareb Private School clinched the gold medal on Thursday in the final of the ongoing 2025 Ecobank School Teams Chess Championship.

Ajayi emerged victorious after scoring six straight wins across all six rounds of the tournament, displaying exceptional strategy and composure throughout the competition.

His schoolmates, Joba Fadojutimi and Daniel Ibrahim, also delivered stellar performances, winning silver and bronze medals respectively — securing a clean sweep for Jareb Private School.

In a fiercely contested event, Ajayi stood out with remarkable tactical skill and focus, rising above his peers to claim the tournament’s top prize.

Speaking after his win, Ajayi said he was excited to bring home the gold medal for his school.

“My dedication to chess and strategic thinking paid off. I’m grateful for the chance to show my skills,” he said.

He also recalled finishing in eighth place during the first edition of the tournament, saying the disappointment motivated him to improve.

“This win is a big step forward. It inspires me to keep working hard and improve so I can compete at the international level,” he added.

Coach Oluwatobiloba Alabi of Jareb Private School expressed gratitude to Ecobank for organizing the tournament and providing a platform for young chess talents.

“I’m proud of my players’ performance. Winning all the medals shows their hard work and commitment to the game,” Alabi said.

He added that the victory would boost the students' confidence and motivate them to aim even higher in future competitions.

Ecobank Vice President, Adeyinka Adewale, praised the students for their impressive display of skill, strategy, and discipline during the championship.

“This event showcases the brilliance, critical thinking, and focus of our young players. To all the winners, I offer my warmest congratulations. Your success reflects your dedication and perseverance,” Adewale said.

He encouraged all participants to continue nurturing their passion for chess, emphasizing its role in building mental strength and problem-solving skills.

Adewale also called on schools and communities to support the development of chess, recognizing its potential to shape future leaders with sharp minds and strong character.
