The Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) has received a major boost to its grassroots and elite development programmes following a donation of badminton equipment from the Badminton Association of Japan under the Japanese Government's Sport for Tomorrow (SFT) initiative.
The equipment was presented during a ceremony in Abuja attended by senior government officials, sports administrators and diplomatic representatives, highlighting the growing sporting relationship between Nigeria and Japan.
Among those present were Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria Suzuki Hideo, National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade, Nigeria Olympic Committee President Habu Gumel, National Institute for Sports Director General Philip Shaibu and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development Anthony Adegboye.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Suzuki said the donation reflects the strong friendship between both countries and demonstrates how sport can strengthen international cooperation. He explained that the initiative followed discussions between Badminton Federation of Nigeria President Francis Orbih and Badminton Association of Japan President Mitsuru Murai, with Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs funding the shipment of the equipment.
The donation includes 55 badminton rackets, 44 shuttlecocks, six racket covers and three racket bags. Although previously used, Ambassador Suzuki said the equipment remains in excellent condition and will help develop badminton across Nigeria.
"We sincerely hope this donation will contribute to the continued growth of badminton in Nigeria, enabling more people to enjoy the sport while inspiring young athletes to pursue their dreams," he said.
BFN President Francis Orbih described the donation as an important intervention that will benefit both grassroots and elite athletes. He also announced that the federation has secured another shipment containing 500 badminton rackets, 100 nets and 200 shuttlecocks to help address the equipment shortage affecting the sport.
Orbih further revealed plans to register badminton academies across the country and establish a National Badminton League to strengthen talent development and create a sustainable pathway for young players. He added that the donated equipment will support members of the national senior and junior teams while also being used for grassroots initiatives such as Shuttle Time.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko praised the federation for building strong international partnerships that will improve athlete development. He said increased access to quality equipment will raise training standards, enhance player performance and improve Nigeria's competitiveness at international competitions.
The federation believes the partnership with Japan will play a key role in expanding grassroots participation and positioning Nigeria among Africa's leading badminton nations.
