Jamie Rutherford secured his first victory on the Sunshine Tour and HotelPlanner Tour with a two-stroke win at the Cell C Cape Town Open at Royal Cape Golf Club on Sunday. His victory came after a composed final round of 69, played in challenging windy conditions, leaving him at 14 under par.
Rutherford's parents, Jeff and Sarah, who had traveled from England to support him, were overcome with emotion as they watched their son achieve this long-awaited triumph. Jeff expressed immense pride in his son's consistent performance and hard work, saying, "Today’s such a great achievement for him."
Rutherford, visibly delighted by the win, shared how special the moment was with his family present. "To travel halfway around the world to come and watch me play shows you how much they support me," he said. "And for me to win when they are here is really special." South Africa’s Keenan Davidse finished in second place, posting a final round of 67 to finish 12 under par.
Rutherford's victory was marked by a solid performance in tough conditions. He made key birdies on both the front and back nine, despite two bogeys during the final stretch. "I’m really pleased with how I played in such tough conditions," he reflected. "I was very good off the tee, and my putting was really good as well."
Rutherford also credited his mental discipline and emotional control during the round, noting the importance of staying focused and present. After many near-misses in previous tournaments, this win was a rewarding start to his season, and he expressed his love for Cape Town and South Africa’s warm hospitality.
