Jamie George Eyes England Milestone After Overcoming Captaincy Snub

Posted : 04 March 2025

Jamie George admitted he feared for his England career after being stripped of the captaincy, but the experienced hooker is now set to earn his 100th cap in Sunday’s Six Nations match against Italy. George, who replaced Owen Farrell as England skipper ahead of last year's tournament, was demoted to vice-captain in January when Maro Itoje was given the leadership role.

Drawing inspiration from England cricketer Joe Root, who responded to losing the Test captaincy in 2022 by excelling as a batsman, George sought to prove his value to the team despite the setback.

The 34-year-old acknowledged the disappointment of losing the armband, recalling a frank conversation with England coach Steve Borthwick over coffee in St Albans. He admitted the decision came as a surprise but ultimately respected Borthwick’s choice, praising Itoje’s leadership in recent weeks.

Instead of dwelling on the change, George used it as motivation, aspiring to emulate Root’s ability to thrive without the burden of captaincy. He hopes that the shift will allow him to play with more freedom and contribute to England’s success.

Rejuvenated by his new role, George has set his sights on further achievements, including another British and Irish Lions tour this summer and a potential place in the 2027 World Cup squad. Despite the initial disappointment, he remains determined to extend his international career and prove his worth through strong performances in the coming weeks. With his milestone cap on the horizon, George is eager to showcase his leadership on the field, even without the official title.
