Jakob Omrzel Wins Vuelta Stage 12 as Enric Mas Extends Overall Lead

Slovenia’s Jakob Omrzel claimed his first Grand Tour stage victory on Thursday, winning Stage 12 of the Vuelta a España with a dominant solo ride to Calar Alto. The 20-year-old Bahrain Victorious rider attacked on the final climb and finished 1:56 ahead of Urko Berrade, with Santiago Buitrago taking third.

Omrzel’s breakthrough also saw him climb to sixth in the general classification, while he moved closer to Oscar Onley in the young rider standings. His victory was particularly notable as he became the youngest Slovenian to win a Grand Tour stage, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Tadej Pogačar.

Behind the winner, Enric Mas strengthened his grip on the red jersey with an impressive attack on the closing section of the 166.6km mountainous stage. The Movistar leader broke away from rivals Primož Roglič and Felix Gall with around 13km remaining and gained 27 seconds on the pair by the finish.

Mas eventually crossed the line sixth, 2:56 behind Omrzel, but extended his overall advantage over Roglič to 1:45, while Gall sits 2:06 behind in third. Richard Carapaz is fourth, with Onley dropping to fifth after losing significant time following an earlier crash.

The stage featured five classified climbs and more than 4,500 metres of elevation gain, making it one of the toughest days of the race so far. The Vuelta continues through the mountains and hills of southern Spain before the race concludes in Granada on September 13.
