Jake Knapp made history at the Cognizant Classic in Florida by becoming the 15th player to shoot a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour. The world number 99 delivered a stunning 12-under-par 59, starting his round with five consecutive birdies before adding seven more across the remaining holes at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.
He had a chance to match the lowest round in PGA Tour history, but his 19-foot eagle putt on the 18th narrowly missed.
Reflecting on his achievement, the 30-year-old American admitted he was aware of his momentum early on but remained focused to avoid losing rhythm. He emphasized staying present and not getting distracted by the possibility of a historic round.
A key moment came on the 15th hole when he sank a long putt, confirming he was in contention for a sub-60 score. However, he remained committed to his strategy and did not let the milestone alter his approach.
Knapp’s remarkable round marked just the fifth time a PGA Tour player had shot under 60 in the opening round of an event. Notably, two of the four previous golfers who accomplished the feat went on to win the tournament.
Knapp, who reached 45th in the world rankings during his rookie season in 2024, claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the Mexico Open and finished fourth at the Cognizant Classic that same year.
As the tournament progresses, Daniel Berger, Russell Henley, and Sami Valimaki sit four strokes behind in a tie for second, while Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth remain in contention.
