Jacques Van Der Merwe Clinches Sunshine Tour Card with Stunning Comeback Win

Jacques Van Der Merwe earned his Sunshine Tour card in spectacular fashion after staging a comeback to win the ninth Betway Big Easy Tour event of the season at Krugersdorp Golf Club. Thursday’s victory marked his third triumph of the current campaign, automatically granting him promotion to the main Sunshine Tour, in line with tour regulations.

Van Der Merwe began the final round at nine-under-par, just one stroke behind leader Andre Van Zyl. As Van Zyl faltered and recorded an even-par round, Van Der Merwe seized the opportunity, carding a brilliant 69 to finish 12-under-par 204 and claim the title.

Reflecting on his achievement, Van Der Merwe said, “Life happens quickly, hey. I was thinking about it just four holes ago—walking on the fairway and realizing how fast things can change, especially in this sport. If you focus on hard work and not on the results, things can happen in the blink of an eye. Being in contention for eight weeks, missing two cuts, and then coming back makes it more nerve-wracking than usual. I was definitely shaking a bit, but I have that Delmas-boy confidence and managed it well.”

With this victory, Van Der Merwe became the first player this season to secure three wins, highlighting a sensational campaign even before it concludes next year. “It means a lot to me,” he added. “I didn’t think I’d have achieved this much by now. But if you work hard and focus on growth rather than the result, the sky’s the limit.”

He also praised the Betway Big Easy Tour for creating opportunities for professional golfers to advance their careers and for the incentives offered to players on the circuit.

The Krugersdorp event was the final tournament of the year before the Christmas break. The Betway Big Easy Tour, which serves as the Sunshine Tour’s feeder circuit, enjoys support from prominent figures including the legendary Ernie Els.
