Ireland will be without captain Caelan Doris, Ronan Kelleher, and Tadhg Furlong for their Six Nations clash against Wales in Cardiff. Doris has suffered a knee injury, while Kelleher is dealing with a neck issue. Furlong, who has already missed matches against England and Scotland, remains unavailable despite making progress in his recovery.
Ireland attack coach Andrew Goodman expressed optimism that all three players could return in time for their next fixture against France on 8 March.
With Ulster’s Iain Henderson and Cormac Izuchukwu also sidelined, Ireland has called up six players, including Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale, and Nick Timoney.
Munster forwards Gavin Coombes and John Hodnett, along with Leinster’s Diarmuid Mangan, have also been added to interim head coach Simon Easterby’s squad. Goodman noted that the newcomers have performed well for their clubs and now have an exciting opportunity to prove themselves on the international stage.
Regarding leadership in Doris’ absence, Goodman highlighted the squad’s strong leadership group, which has developed over recent years. He mentioned several players as potential captains, including Peter O’Mahony, Jack Conan, Dan Sheehan, Garry Ringrose, James Ryan, and Cian Prendergast.
While no final decision has been announced, Ireland has a range of experienced players to take on the captaincy role against Wales.
