Indonesia Dominates as Lagos International Badminton Classics 2025

Posted : 31 August 2025

The 8th edition of the Lagos International Badminton Classics came to a thrilling close at the Okoya Thomas Indoor Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, with Indonesia emerging as the standout nation, sweeping multiple categories in a grand finale filled with passion, drama, and world-class shuttle action.

The finals — boasting $17,500 in prize money — lived up to their billing, delivering high-octane matches and an atmosphere worthy of one of Africa’s premier badminton showcases.

The day opened with the Mixed Doubles final, where Indonesia’s Prasetyo and Munggaren overpowered India’s Ravat and Maneesha in straight sets (21-15, 21-17).

In the Men’s Singles, Indonesia’s rising star P. Shujiwo battled Japan’s M. Koga in a thrilling contest. Shujiwo’s relentless play earned him a 21-15, 21-17 victory, boosting his global ranking from world No. 63 and cementing his status as a player to watch.

India enjoyed success in the Women’s Singles, as defending champion S. Lele defeated compatriot Kashyap 21-15, 21-17 to retain her title, becoming a back-to-back champion in Lagos.

The Women’s Doubles final further highlighted Indonesia’s dominance. Meida and Nastine stormed past UAE’s Quathun and Sreejithparol in just 25 minutes (21-18, 21-7) — the shortest match of the day.

In the Men’s Doubles, UAE’s P. Ravikrishna and Rimdahoi fell to neutral Russian-origin pair Alimov and Ogloblin, who claimed gold with a commanding 21-15, 21-12 victory.

For hosts Nigeria, pride came in the form of a bronze medal in Women’s Doubles, earned by Obanisola and her partner, ensuring the green and white flag appeared on the podium.

Indonesia’s golden sweep was the highlight of the night, celebrated with patriotic fervor as their Ambassador to Nigeria, Bambang Suharto, presented the Men’s Singles trophy. The Indonesian anthem echoed several times through the hall, underscoring the nation’s dominance.

Beyond the matches, the Classics also showcased Lagos as a sports tourism hub, with visiting athletes praising the hospitality of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN). Supported by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA), the event met international standards.

BFN President Francis Orbih hailed the success of the tournament:

“The Lagos International Badminton Classics has once again proven that Nigeria is ready to host world-class sporting events. We are building a brand that highlights Africa’s talent, hospitality, and passion for badminton.”

As the lights dimmed on Teslim Balogun Stadium, the 8th Lagos International Badminton Classics ended on a high, leaving fans with memories of intense rallies, world-class performances, and the promise of an even more spectacular edition in 2026.
