India to Field Largest Team at Lagos 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships

India will field the largest delegation at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships after the Commonwealth Fencing Federation (CFF) confirmed that 20 countries have registered for the tournament in Lagos.

The championships will take place from August 9 to August 14 and will bring together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in the epee, foil and sabre disciplines.

According to the CFF, India will be represented by 67 fencers across the Veteran, U-23, Para and Senior categories, making it the biggest contingent at the competition.

Host nation Nigeria will welcome teams from Australia, Bangladesh, Botswana, Cyprus, England, Ghana, Guernsey, Jamaica, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, The Gambia, Togo and Wales.

The federation said the championships will mark the return of the event to Africa for the first time in 10 years. The last edition on the continent was held in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2016.

Commonwealth Fencing Federation President Dufour Marie-France described the Lagos championships as a transformational event that will introduce several innovations to the competition.

She noted that the U-23 individual category will be included alongside the established Senior and Veteran events for the first time, creating additional opportunities for young fencers to compete at an international level.

Marie-France also revealed that wheelchair fencing will make its debut as an official medal event after para-fencing featured as a demonstration sport during the 2022 championships in London.

President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, described the tournament as a historic milestone for both Nigeria and African fencing. He said the competition would be the first Senior and Veteran Commonwealth Fencing Championships hosted on the continent.

Samuel added that the event would celebrate sporting excellence while promoting friendship, unity and cultural exchange among participating nations. He also expressed confidence that Lagos would provide a memorable experience for athletes, officials and visitors throughout the championship.

The 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships are expected to further raise the profile of fencing in Nigeria while giving local athletes the opportunity to compete against some of the Commonwealth's best fencers on home soil.
