India, South Africa witness historic day of test cricket with 23 wickets falling in Cape Town

Posted : 04 January 2024

India dominated an eventful opening day in Cape Town as 23 wickets tumbled in a Test match against South Africa. Mohammed Siraj claimed a career-best 6-15 to dismiss the hosts for just 55 runs. However, India's momentum was curtailed when they collapsed from 153-4 to 153 all out, losing their last six wickets for no runs in just 11 balls after tea.

South Africa struggled in their second innings, ending the day at 62-3, with India's KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and others contributing to an intense and unpredictable day of Test cricket.

The second Test in Cape Town witnessed a remarkable turn of events, featuring extraordinary collapses from both teams. After Mohammed Siraj's superb bowling display, India seemed in control, but a stunning collapse in their batting handed the advantage back to South Africa. KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah fell in quick succession to Lungi Ngidi, triggering a collapse that saw six Indian batters dismissed for ducks. This unprecedented scenario, with six wickets falling without a run scored, added a historic twist to the Test match.

South Africa, facing a significant first-innings deficit, managed to pick up a few wickets in their second innings. However, their batting struggles continued, with Elgar, De Zorzi, and Stubbs falling early. A defiant effort from Markram, who remained unbeaten on 36, provided a glimmer of hope for the hosts.

Despite the chaos, both teams faced difficulties dealing with the rising ball on a lively pitch. The unpredictable nature of the game sets the stage for an intriguing continuation on day two, with South Africa trailing by 36 runs and the match hanging in the balance.

As the day unfolded, records were broken, and the match showcased the challenges posed by the conditions. Siraj's exceptional bowling, India's dramatic collapse, and South Africa's resilience all contributed to a gripping day of Test cricket, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the sport.
