The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial international multi-sport competition featuring athletes from nations within the Commonwealth—countries mostly made up of former British colonies.
The most recent edition of the Games was held in Birmingham in 2022, with the next set to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2026—a city that previously hosted the 2014 edition.
Now, the race to host the 2030 Games has become a two-horse contest, with India emerging as Nigeria’s main rival.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) recently confirmed that it met the March 28, 2025, deadline to submit its expression of interest to host the Games.
Meanwhile, India has made its move official, submitting a bid to host the event in Ahmedabad. This strategic decision also aligns with the country’s broader ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games in the same city.
Notably, Nigeria had previously lost its bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which were ultimately awarded to Glasgow, Scotland.
