India Faces Series Defeat After Huge First Innings Collapse Against South Africa

Posted : 24 November 2025

India suffered a heavy first-innings collapse on day three of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati, being bowled out for 201 and handing the visitors a commanding 288-run lead. Seamer Marco Jansen starred with 6-48, finishing off India’s innings and leaving South Africa at 26-0, firmly in control and favourites to secure a 2-0 series victory.

Resuming at 9-0, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal top-scored for India with 58 before being caught off spinner Simon Harmer, who played a key role in restricting the hosts. Jansen then wreaked havoc on India’s middle order, taking four wickets in quick succession as the home side collapsed from 102-3 to 122-7.

Washington Sundar fought a lone battle with a patient 48, sharing a 72-run partnership with Kuldeep Yadav (19). His resistance ended when he edged a Harmer delivery, becoming one of five Indian wickets taken by Aiden Markram. Jansen wrapped up the innings by dismissing the remaining batsmen, Kuldeep and Jasprit Bumrah.

India had gone 12 years without losing a Test series at home before their 3-0 defeat to New Zealand last year. Although they recovered to beat the West Indies 2-0 in October, losing this two-match series to South Africa would mark a second home series defeat in just over a year, raising concerns about their consistency in front of home crowds.
