Im Jin-hee, Lee So-mi Claim First LPGA Titles

Posted : 30 June 2025

South Korean golfers Im Jin-hee and Lee So-mi captured their first LPGA titles in thrilling fashion at the 2025 Dow Championship, edging out American duo Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang in a dramatic playoff on Sunday. The pairs event, held at Midland Golf Club in Michigan, concluded with a pressure-packed extra hole that showcased the South Koreans' poise and teamwork.

Victory Sealed in Playoff Drama
After both teams finished tied at 20-under-par following four rounds, the tournament returned to the 18th hole for a sudden-death playoff using the alternate-shot format. Im and Lee held their nerve, with Im sinking a critical birdie putt that put pressure on the Americans. When Khang missed a short birdie putt that could have extended the playoff, the South Koreans sealed their maiden LPGA triumph.

Team Chemistry Key to Success
Celebrating their victory, Im credited their unity, saying, "We made it together. If I had to do it alone, I couldn't make it." Lee, who delivered the birdie putt that tied the match on the 71st hole, echoed the sentiment, calling them “the best team ever” and expressing hope to return for another shot at the title next year.

Americans Narrowly Miss Out
Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang had taken the clubhouse lead after an impressive final-round 10-under 60 in the best-ball format, totaling 20-under-par for the tournament. Thompson's clutch birdie putt on the 72nd hole appeared to put them in prime position, but the South Korean team matched the score with a birdie on 17 and a near-miss on 18 that led to the playoff. Despite a strong tee shot from Thompson in the playoff, the U.S. pair fell just short.

Strong Performances from the Field
The competition was fierce throughout the weekend. American Lindy Duncan and China’s Miranda Wang combined for an 11-under 59—the lowest round of the day—to vault into a tie for third at 18-under. They were joined by Belgium’s Manon De Roey and France’s Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, who posted a solid 64. Overnight leaders Sarah Schmelzel and Albane Valenzuela faded slightly, carding a four-under 66 to finish alone in fifth at 17-under.

The 2025 Dow Championship delivered an exciting conclusion that highlighted the power of teamwork and composure under pressure. For Im Jin-hee and Lee So-mi, it was a historic and emotional first LPGA title, while Thompson and Khang left with pride in their strong showing. As the tour continues, this breakthrough victory could mark the beginning of a new era for the emerging South Korean duo.
