The city of Ilorin is set to come alive as the second edition of the ABN State Rapid Chess Tournament (RCT) holds on Monday, June 9, at 9:00 AM at the KFA Press Conference Room.
Powered by Alhaji Ahmed Nagode Bolaji, the tournament is organised in collaboration with the Kwara State Chess Association as part of grassroots efforts to develop and promote chess in the state.
According to the organisers, the 2025 edition aims to build on the success of the maiden event held in November 2024, which saw Mallam Mubaraq Bello, a former aide to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, crowned overall champion.
This year’s competition will feature male and female players, battling it out under the 10-minute plus 3-second time control format.
The tournament will be officiated by International Arbiter Dr. Bode Durotoye, while FIDE Arbiter Adeoti Oladapo Bolaji, a Superintendent with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), will serve as Chief Arbiter.
Organisers say the 2025 edition promises intense and exciting competition, attracting chess enthusiasts from across Kwara State and beyond.
The championship not only seeks to promote the game of chess and intellectual engagement among youths, but also reflects Alhaji Bolaji Nagode’s continued commitment to community development and youth empowerment through sports.
The Kwara State Chess Association has expressed deep appreciation to Alhaji Nagode for his unwavering support and dedication to the growth of chess in the state.
