Ikoyi Club 1938 has concluded its week-long 88th anniversary celebrations, bringing to a close a series of events held from September 28 to October 4 in Lagos. The celebration was organised under the theme “Legacy in Motion,” highlighting the club’s history while focusing on its future direction.
The programme opened on September 28 with a Media Connect event at the club’s Rotunda. The event attracted media executives, corporate leaders and prominent figures from Nigeria’s entertainment industry as the club unveiled its anniversary programme and commemorative identity.
Several Nollywood personalities were recognised during the opening activities for their contributions to Nigerian society and the creative industry. Among those in attendance were Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Ireti Doyle, Sola Sobowale, Kunle Afolayan, Kate Henshaw, Elizabeth Benson, Ekpeyong Bassey and Muyiwa Ademola.
Sports remained a major part of the anniversary programme, reflecting the club’s long-standing identity as a sporting and social institution. Its anniversary games featured activities across several sections, with members competing for honours before the celebrations moved into their final weekend.
The wider programme also included staff engagement activities, an elders’ gathering, cultural events, a health walk, a food and cultural showcase, and other social activities. The official anniversary schedule listed events including Banking and Finance Day, Real Estate Day, Digital Night, a children’s party, Ladies’ Night and a Global Cultural Day.
The club’s chairman, Akinwunmi Akintola, said the anniversary was designed to connect the institution’s heritage with its future. Akintola, who has been a club member for more than six decades, stressed the importance of preserving the values and traditions built by previous generations while continuing to develop the institution.
The celebrations reached their climax on Sunday, October 4, with the Anniversary Gala on the Main Lawn. The official programme described the finale as an elegant evening featuring entertainment, fine dining and a celebration of the club’s 88-year history.
Ikoyi Club 1938 was established in 1938 through the merger of the European Club and Lagos Golf Club. The 88th anniversary programme therefore served as both a celebration of its sporting and social heritage and a platform for highlighting its continuing development.
