IHF Women’s Nations Trophy: Nuhu Fires Nigeria to Bronze in Burkina Faso

Nigeria’s Senior Women’s Handball team ended their IHF Women’s Nations Trophy Africa Zone III campaign on a high, defeating hosts Burkina Faso 31-23 to secure the bronze medal in Ouagadougou.

The Nigerian team, coached by Michael Taangahar, produced a disciplined performance at the Palais des Sports de Ouaga 2000, taking control early and maintaining their advantage throughout the encounter.

Nigeria established a five-goal cushion by halftime, leading 16-11 after a strong opening period.

The team continued to dictate the pace after the restart, adding 15 goals in the second half while restricting the hosts to 12 to complete a comfortable eight-goal victory.

Wuraola Nuhu was the standout performer for Nigeria, scoring 11 goals and earning the Most Valuable Player award for her impressive display in the bronze-medal match.

Kinnan Haruna contributed five goals, while Saaoloo Daina added four.

Grace Ahamfefula and Lucy Onyekwere scored three goals each, with Mercy Audu and Sadiya Abubakar contributing two apiece. Balikisu Muhammad completed Nigeria’s scoring with one goal.

Nigeria were also clinical from the seven-metre line, converting both opportunities they received, while Burkina Faso scored from all seven of their attempts.

The victory secured third place for Nigeria and provided a positive conclusion to their campaign in the Africa Zone III competition.

The result also offered the Nigerian side some consolation after missing out on a place in the final, with the team showing resilience to finish the tournament with a convincing victory on the hosts’ home court.

Benin Republic emerged champions after edging Côte d’Ivoire 29-28 in a closely fought final.

The triumph earned Benin Republic qualification for the 2026 CAHB African Women’s Handball Championship scheduled for later in the year.
