After Nigeria’s U-20 men’s handball team began their campaign at the IHF Trophy Africa Zone 3 tournament on a winning note, defeating Burkina Faso 23–18, the U-18 side also secured a convincing 30–19 victory over Niger in Lomé, Togo.
The Coach Abdulhakim Yakubu-tutored U-18 side delivered a composed performance to overcome Niger Republic in a match that tested their resilience, especially in the early stages.
Nigeria held a narrow 12–10 lead at halftime, but came alive in the second half with a more clinical attacking display and improved defensive organisation to pull away convincingly.
Aliyu Rufai was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his outstanding performance, playing a key role in guiding the team to victory.
Meanwhile, the U-20 team, guided by Coach David Emmanuel, showed composure in their opening fixture to defeat Burkina Faso.
Nigeria led 12–8 at halftime and maintained control in the second half to seal the 23–18 win.
Faruk Kareem emerged as the MVP for the U-20 side after an impressive outing that helped secure the win.
Both teams have now built solid momentum in the tournament organised by the International Handball Federation, boosting their chances of progressing to the next stage.
These victories reflect the high level of preparation and talent within the Nigerian handball youth setup. With both age grades securing vital opening wins, the nation is well-positioned to dominate the regional qualifiers in Togo.
