IHF Nations Trophy: Nigeria face early test against Ghana in Ouagadougou

Posted : 03 September 2026

Nigeria’s Senior Women’s Handball team will begin their quest for honours at the inaugural IHF Women’s Nations Trophy Africa Zone III on Thursday with a potentially decisive clash against Ghana in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The encounter, scheduled for 6:00 p.m. GMT, represents the first of two demanding Group Stage fixtures for Coach Michael Taangahar’s side, who will return to action just 24 hours later against hosts Burkina Faso.

With little time between the two matches, Nigeria will need to combine a strong opening performance against Ghana with careful management of their squad as they prepare for another important test against the Burkinabe hosts on Friday.

The Nigerian team arrives in Ouagadougou after several weeks of intensive preparation at the Indoor Sports Hall, Package B of the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Taangahar used the training camp to assess his players, sharpen their tactical approach and build the cohesion required ahead of the championship.

The preparation continued in Cotonou, Benin Republic, where Nigeria faced a selected side drawn from leading Beninese clubs Aspac and Flowers Handball Clubs in a warm-up encounter.

The Nigerian women emerged 34-31 winners, providing the technical crew with valuable match exposure and an opportunity to assess the team’s readiness before the competitive action began.

The result will offer a confidence boost to a squad that has spent weeks preparing for the tournament, but Ghana is expected to provide a different challenge when the real battle begins.

Nigeria will need to hit the ground running against the Ghanaians before turning their attention to Burkina Faso, who will have the advantage of playing on home soil in Friday’s second Group Stage encounter.

The inaugural IHF Women’s Nations Trophy Africa Zone III runs from September 2 to 6 in Ouagadougou, with Nigeria hoping their extensive preparation will translate into a strong showing on the continental stage.

For Taangahar and his players, the immediate priority is clear: start strongly against Ghana, build momentum and put themselves in the best possible position before facing the hosts.
