Spain’s Igor Arrieta claimed a dramatic victory on a rain-lashed stage five of the Giro d’Italia after a chaotic breakaway battle, while Portugal’s Afonso Eulalio took over the overall race lead despite finishing second.
The pair broke away from the peloton with around 50 kilometres remaining on the 203km route to Potenza in southern Italy, battling torrential rain and treacherous road conditions. Both riders were involved in heavy late crashes after losing control on slippery corners, sliding into kerbs and sustaining visible damage to their clothing and bodies.
Arrieta was the first to crash with 14km remaining, briefly losing time before remounting on a replacement bike provided by his team car. Eulalio suffered a similar fate a few kilometres later, hitting the road heavily before also continuing after switching bikes.
As the stage entered its final kilometres, the conditions continued to cause problems. Arrieta overshot a corner in Potenza and momentarily veered off course, while both riders repeatedly struggled for grip on the soaked roads.
In the closing kilometre, Arrieta recovered strongly and managed to close down a tiring Eulalio before overtaking him just before the finish line. The dramatic sprint came after what appeared to be an unspoken understanding between the two breakaway riders, with one contesting the stage win and the other securing the general classification advantage.
Arrieta, son of former professional cyclist José Luis Arrieta, was visibly emotional after the finish, describing the victory as deeply meaningful after a physically exhausting day in extreme conditions.
Despite missing out on the stage win, Eulalio benefited from the large gap over the peloton to move into the maglia rosa. He now leads the Giro d’Italia by nearly three minutes over Arrieta, with the overall favourites more than six minutes behind.
The result adds to a strong showing for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, following teammate Jhonatan Narváez’s victory on stage four, although the team also suffered setbacks earlier in the race with key riders lost in crashes.
Elsewhere, Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard finished safely in the main group, remaining 15th overall but expected to challenge when the race reaches the mountain stages.
