150 Golfers to Compete as Ibadan Hosts 4th Oluyole Amateur Open Golf Tournament

Posted : 31 July 2025

The 4th edition of the Oluyole Amateur Open Golf Tournament 2025, organised by the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC) in collaboration with the Oyo State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is scheduled to tee off from August 22 to August 24.

Captain of the Ibadan Golf Club, Seyi Alaba, made the announcement at a press conference held in Ibadan to herald the upcoming event. He revealed that no fewer than 150 golfers from various states across Nigeria and beyond are expected to converge on the Ibadan golf course for the tournament.

Alaba emphasized that the tournament has grown into the club’s flagship annual event, showcasing significant potential for sports tourism and serving as a catalyst for local economic development.

In addition to its entertainment and health benefits, he noted that the event would generate revenue for the state and further promote the hospitality sector. Alaba also highlighted the club’s efforts to encourage youth participation in the sport, aiming to shift the perception that golf is reserved only for the elite, retirees, and older generations.

He praised the convener of the tournament, Mr. Folarin Laosun, for incorporating cultural elements into the event, aligning with the “Oluyole” identity it proudly carries.

“Golf is one of the ways to promote our tourism. That is why the Ibadan Golf Club remains the home of golf and its traditions in Nigeria. This tournament will significantly boost tourism in Ibadan,” Alaba said.

Speaking further, Laosun described the amateur event as a platform for learning and talent development, encouraging players to consider professional golf in the future.

“Golf is a form of exercise with many health benefits. Registration is free, and spectators are welcome to watch the competition at no cost,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, the Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, explained that the tournament supports the state’s economic agenda through tourism and infrastructure.

The commissioner assured that the government would continue prioritizing security and infrastructure to make Oyo State more attractive to investors and tourists.

“Sports tourism is one area we believe can contribute greatly to our state’s economy. When people travel for sports, they stay in hotels, eat local food, and shop in our markets—these activities will drive economic growth,” he said.

The overall winner of the tournament will receive a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) courtesy of Carloha Chery Nigeria, one of the tournament's sponsors. Winners in other categories will also receive various consolation prizes.
