Hyo Joo Kim moved closer to her eighth LPGA Tour title after producing a spectacular third round at the Fortinet Founders Cup. The 30-year-old South Korean golfer delivered a 6-under-par 66 on Saturday at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club. Her performance took her total to 17-under 199, extending her lead from four strokes to five as she enters the final day of competition.
The round began with an extraordinary scoring burst that saw Kim play the first six holes in 6-under-par. She recorded birdies on the first, third, fourth, and sixth holes, alongside a clinical eagle on the par-5 fifth. Despite three bogeys later in the day, her aggressive start proved too much for the chasing pack to overcome. Kim previously won this event in 2015 and is now the clear favorite to reclaim the trophy.
World number two Nelly Korda remains the primary challenger after matching Kim’s round of 66. Korda remained bogey-free throughout the day and finished with a total score of 12-under. She highlighted the difficulty of the tree-lined course, noting that a clean scorecard was a significant achievement given the tricky greens. Korda is making her first appearance since winning the season-opening Tournament of Champions in Florida.
The leaderboard features several international contenders trailing the top two positions. China’s Ruixin Liu shot a 66 to move into a tie for third place at 11-under alongside Mexico’s Gaby Lopez. Meanwhile, world number one Jeeno Thitikul sits in a tie for fifth at 9-under. Thitikul currently leads the Race to CME Globe standings but will need a historic final round to catch the leader.
Kim’s statistical performance was marked by high efficiency on the greens despite hitting only eight of 14 fairways. She expressed surprise at her own hot start, describing the opening six holes as unbelievable golf. The South Korean star has held the lead since the opening day and is now eyeing a wire-to-wire victory. The final round will determine if she can maintain her composure against a surging Korda.
