Hughes, Wannasaen Shine with Low Rounds

Posted : 12 September 2025

Mackenzie Hughes fired a sizzling nine-under 63 to take the first-round lead at the US PGA Tour Procore Championship at Silverado Resort in Napa, California. The Canadian, a two-time PGA Tour winner, carded 11 birdies despite bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes.

Hughes started strong with early birdies on the second and third holes and continued his momentum with streaks on the fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth, and tenth holes, finishing with birdies on 16 and 18 to hold a one-shot advantage over Ryder Cup-bound Ben Griffin and Matt McCarty, both of whom shot 64.

Other Ryder Cup contenders made their presence felt. World No. 4 Russell Henley recovered from a slow start to post 65, tied for fourth with Lanto Griffin, while reigning US Open champion J.J. Spaun shot 67. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler signed for 70, highlighting the strong field preparing for the biennial US vs. Europe showdown later this month.

Meanwhile, over in Cincinnati, Thailand’s Chanettee Wannasaen fired a bogey-free nine-under 63 to seize the first-round lead at the Queen City Championship. The 21-year-old’s round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-four 10th and seven additional birdies, giving her a two-stroke advantage over American Gigi Stoll, who carded 65.

A group of six players, including Kim Sei-young, Kim A-lim, Park Kum-kang, Patty Tavatanakit, Chien Peiyun, and Jenny Bae, shared third place at six-under 66. Defending champion Lydia Ko shot 70, while Thailand’s world No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul posted 69. Wannasaen’s performance marked a strong rebound after a challenging 2025 season, boosting her confidence heading into the remainder of the LPGA campaign.

Both events showcased players finding form at crucial points in the season, with Hughes and Wannasaen demonstrating their scoring prowess and setting themselves up as early favorites in Napa and Cincinnati.
