Higgins Fights Back as Wu Yize Takes Control in World Championship Semi-Finals

Posted : 30 April 2026

John Higgins produced a determined comeback to level his World Championship semi-final against Shaun Murphy at 4-4 after trailing 3-1 in a tense opening session at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

The four-time world champion initially struggled for fluency, appearing affected by a late finish in his previous match. Despite a series of uncharacteristic errors, Higgins gradually found his rhythm, scraping together frames through resilience rather than heavy scoring to stay level at the end of the session.

Murphy had started strongly, building a 3-1 lead with breaks including a century, and looked set to extend his advantage. However, missed opportunities allowed Higgins back into the contest, with the Scot edging several scrappy frames before finishing the session strongly with a composed response.

Elsewhere in the other semi-final, Chinese rising star Wu Yize took a commanding 6-2 lead over Mark Allen. Wu impressed with confident break-building and controlled play, dominating large parts of the session.

Play in that match was briefly disrupted by a power outage at the Crucible, forcing a short suspension. Once play resumed, Allen briefly responded with a strong break, but Wu quickly regained control, punishing errors and finishing the session firmly on top.

Allen, who had hoped to make a strong push for the final, was left largely contained as Wu produced a series of fluent breaks to seize control of the match.

Both semi-finals will resume on Friday, with Higgins and Murphy finely poised and Wu holding a strong advantage as the battle for a place in the World Championship final continues.
