Hideki Matsuyama made history on Sunday by breaking the 72-hole PGA Tour scoring record with an impressive eight-under par 65, finishing at a remarkable 35-under par 257 to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions. The 32-year-old Japanese golfer outlasted American Collin Morikawa, securing his 20th worldwide title and 11th PGA Tour victory in the 2025 season opener.
Matsuyama’s final birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, sealed the victory and set the new record for the lowest total over four rounds.
The previous PGA Tour low tournament record of 34-under par 258 was held by Australian Cameron Smith, who set it on the same course in 2022. With his lead comfortably ahead of Morikawa, Matsuyama needed a birdie on the 18th hole to break the record.
After chipping from just off the green, Matsuyama sunk an eight-foot birdie putt, clinching the record and finishing the tournament with a fist pump of celebration. "That last putt, it felt like if I make it, it's going to be the record, so I'm so happy that it went in," Matsuyama said through a translator.
This victory marked Matsuyama’s third win in 12 months, following titles at Riviera and Memphis in the previous year. The 2021 Masters champion came into the tournament with a fresh mindset, following a successful off-season.
"I was able to get a great off-season and get a fresh start this week and play well this week, so it's a great way to start," Matsuyama commented after the win. Throughout the final round, Matsuyama kept his composure, maintaining a lead of two to four strokes over Morikawa, who kept the pressure on but could not catch him.
Morikawa, who shot a 67 and finished second with a score of 260, reflected on the few missed opportunities that could have made a difference. “Going through the shots I left out there, there's a good handful I wish I could have back,” he admitted. South Korea’s Im Sung-jae finished third with 263, while Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas secured fourth with a score of 267.
