HFN Elects New Board as Ojih Becomes President

Posted : 27 October 2025
Jibril Saidu Ojih, FNIQS, has been elected President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN).

Ojih, who currently serves as the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Handball Association and represents the North-Central Zone on the HFN board, defeated John Oris, the South-South Zonal Representative, by 9 votes to 5 in the presidential election conducted by the National Sports Commission (NSC) at the Indoor Sports Hall, Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

In the Vice Presidential election, Otunba Sylvester emerged victorious after defeating Dr. (Mrs.) Toyin Aluko by the same margin of 9–5 votes.

Earlier, Honourable Gbenga Arole secured victory over Mr. Osawe by 5–1 votes to become the South-West Zonal Representative on the HFN board. The election had been postponed weeks earlier by the NSC.

Meanwhile, the outgoing President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Ocheho, congratulated Mr. Ojih on his well-deserved victory, describing him as one of the key pillars behind the growth and revival of handball in Nigeria.

“I warmly congratulate Jibril Saidu Ojih, FNIQS, on his well-deserved election as the new President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria,” Ocheho said.

“Ojih has been one of the strong pillars behind the steady progress of handball in our country. His commitment, passion, and contributions to the game have been invaluable, and I am confident that under his leadership, handball in Nigeria will continue to grow in strength and stature.”

Ocheho added that it was an honor to serve alongside dedicated individuals like Ojih, expressing optimism that the new leadership will build on existing achievements and further elevate the sport.

“I have no doubt that his tenure will build on our collective achievements and take Nigerian handball to even greater heights. I wish him and his new board the very best as they steer the Federation toward sustained excellence and success.”

Ocheho also extended heartfelt gratitude to the entire Nigerian Handball Family for their unwavering support throughout his tenure.

The newly elected board members have expressed a collective commitment to advancing handball development, strengthening grassroots programs, and enhancing Nigeria’s representation in international competitions.
