Henco Venter is reluctantly departing from Glasgow Warriors, feeling disappointed that his exit is largely due to a Scottish Rugby policy aiming to reduce the number of foreign players in professional club squads. The South African back-row received an emotional send-off from the fans following Glasgow’s 36-18 victory over the Stormers, which secured their place in the United Rugby Championship semi-final against Leinster. Although Venter has agreed to join French club Brive, he would have preferred to extend his two-year stint at Scotstoun.
Warriors head coach Franco Smith expressed a clear preference for keeping Venter, stating earlier in the year that he would have definitely wanted the South African to stay if it were up to him. Venter acknowledged the situation’s complexity, explaining that the decision comes from higher up within Scottish Rugby’s strategy to develop more Scottish-qualified players. While he respects the plan and understands the focus on nurturing local talent, he feels privileged to have contributed to the club and country during his time in Scotland.
Despite feeling unhappy about being let go, Venter emphasized his professional attitude toward the decision. He noted that rugby requires acceptance of such challenges and that he aims to continue performing at his best and enjoying every moment on the pitch. With Glasgow set to face a tough semi-final against Leinster at the Aviva Stadium, Venter is focused on giving his all for the team, regardless of what lies ahead.
Reflecting on his time in Glasgow, Venter described it as a special experience not only for himself but also for his wife and daughter. He believes the Warriors have the potential to cause an upset against the reigning champions, despite a heavy loss to Leinster earlier in the season. Confident in the team’s capabilities, he said the belief in their chances creates a magical atmosphere, making it a privilege to be part of such a competitive and determined squad.
