Hatton Wins Dubai Desert Classic as McIlroy's Title Defense Falls Short

Posted : 20 January 2025

Tyrrell Hatton secured a thrilling victory at the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday, claiming his fifth Rolex Series win and continuing his impressive form on the European Tour. The Englishman made a crucial five-foot par putt on the 18th hole to stay one shot ahead of overnight leader Daniel Hillier, who had closed the gap with a birdie on the par-5 final hole.

Despite starting the day with a bogey, Hatton posted a solid three-under-par 69 to finish with a 15-under-par total, solidifying his place as the event's winner.

This victory marks a significant milestone for Hatton, as it ties him with his LIV Golf captain, Jon Rahm, for the most wins in the DP World Tour's elevated events.

Hatton's success is made even more remarkable by the fact that he remains active on the DP World Tour despite the controversy surrounding his participation in LIV Golf, having appealed against fines and not resigning from his membership. His win is expected to propel him from 17th to 8th in the world rankings.

Rory McIlroy, aiming to secure the Dubai Desert Classic title for the third consecutive year, had a strong final round, shooting a 66 with five birdies on the back nine. However, his efforts fell short as he finished tied for fourth.

McIlroy reflected on his performance, noting that while he left himself with too much to do after the first three days, he was pleased with his improvement over the weekend. Despite not securing the win, he feels optimistic about his form heading into future tournaments.
