Haeran Ryu Wins Evian Championship to Secure Second Straight Major Title

Posted : 13 July 2026

South Korea's Haeran Ryu continued her remarkable rise in women's golf by capturing the Amundi Evian Championship, defeating Canada's Brooke Henderson in a dramatic playoff to secure her second major title in just two weeks. The victory came after Ryu held her nerve on the first extra hole to complete another memorable week in France.

Ryu entered the final round with a three-shot advantage after making history on Saturday with an incredible 11-under-par 60, the lowest round ever recorded in a women's major championship. She closed with an even-par 71 on Sunday, producing a crucial birdie on the 18th hole to finish level with Henderson and force a playoff.

Henderson staged one of the tournament's greatest comebacks, beginning the day seven shots behind the leader before firing a brilliant seven-under 64. The Canadian's spectacular round featured three eagles, including one at the final hole, allowing the 2022 Evian champion to draw level with Ryu at the top of the leaderboard.

The playoff was decided on the first extra hole after Henderson's tee shot drifted left, forcing her to lay up. Ryu capitalised on the opportunity by producing a composed approach and converting a winning birdie, while Henderson could only make par. Reflecting on her latest triumph, Ryu described the achievement as an "unreal dream," having gone from never winning a major to collecting two in consecutive starts following her victory at the Women's PGA Championship.

The victory earned Ryu the winner's prize of $1.4 million and made her one of only two players to claim multiple women's majors this season, alongside world number one Nelly Korda, who won the Chevron Championship and the U.S. Women's Open earlier in the year.

Japan's Aki Iwai briefly shared the lead during the closing stages but finished third after narrowly missing a birdie opportunity on the 18th hole. Fellow Japanese golfers Miyu Yamashita and Mao Saigo tied for fourth alongside South Korea's Jin-Hee Im, while Sweden's Anna Nordqvist was the leading European finisher. England's Charley Hull and Lottie Woad ended the championship further down the leaderboard.
