Haeran Ryu Battles Back to Seize Halfway Lead at AIG Women's Open

Haeran Ryu produced another outstanding display to take the outright lead after the second round of the AIG Women's Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes. The South Korean golfer recovered from a difficult opening stretch before finishing with a birdie on the 18th to post a two-under-par 69 and move to the top of the leaderboard by one stroke.

The 25-year-old is chasing a place in golf history as she attempts to become only the fifth player to win three major championships in a single calendar year. Fresh from victories at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship and the Amundi Evian Championship, Ryu has carried her exceptional form into the final major of the season.

Ryu's second round appeared to be unravelling early after she slipped to three over par through her opening five holes. Rather than panic, she remained composed and responded with five birdies over the remainder of the round, completing a remarkable recovery that strengthened her position heading into the weekend.

Speaking after her round, Ryu highlighted the importance of finishing strongly, explaining that ending the day with a birdie provides confidence for the following round. She said patience was the key after her difficult start and expressed satisfaction at managing to finish under par despite the early setbacks.

Japan's Shiho Kuwaki sits one shot behind after carding a one-under-par 70, while first-round leader Jeeno Thitikul dropped back following a two-over-par 73. American Yealimi Noh also remains firmly in contention after matching 70 to share third place with the Thai world number two.

Among the home favourites, England's Lottie Woad remains within striking distance despite surrendering ground late in her round. The 22-year-old followed her opening 69 with a 71 that featured three front-nine birdies before bogeys on the back nine left her five shots off the lead.

Fellow English golfer Charley Hull stayed at two under after an even-par round, while world number one Nelly Korda climbed back into contention with an impressive 68. Three-time major champion Lydia Ko also remains well placed heading into the weekend.
