Gumel Commends NOC Governance Seminar, Promises Continued Capacity Building

President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Habu Gumel, has described a two-day Good Governance Seminar for sports federation presidents as a success. He said the programme provided useful insights into sports administration, athletes' welfare and improved performance.

The seminar was held in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen governance across Nigeria's sports federations. It brought federation leaders together to discuss practical approaches to effective administration and athlete development.

Gumel expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the programme and said the NOC would continue to organise similar capacity-building initiatives. He noted that regular training would help federation officials improve governance structures and strengthen sports administration.

“We are satisfied with the outcome of the seminar, and we intend to continue with programmes that will build the capacity of our sports federations and improve governance,” Gumel said.

President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Musa Nimrod, also welcomed the initiative. He said the knowledge gained during the seminar would provide useful guidance for improving the administration and development of volleyball.

Donald Rukare, the seminar facilitator and former President of the Uganda Olympic Committee, also praised the programme. Rukare urged participating federations to turn the knowledge gained during the two-day session into practical measures that could strengthen governance and improve athletes' welfare.

The seminar focused on governance principles and practical approaches that sports administrators can apply within their respective federations. The organisers also highlighted the connection between effective administration, athlete welfare and sporting performance.

President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Ibrahim Abdul, said the lessons from the seminar would contribute to efforts to create a better environment for athletes and sports administrators. He said the knowledge acquired could help shape future development within the federation.

The NOC said the programme forms part of its wider efforts to improve the capacity of sports administrators across Nigeria. Continued training is expected to support stronger governance practices and more effective management within the country's sports federations.
