Governor Sanwo-Olu Celebrates Rukayat Suleimon for Historic World Sambo Cup Gold in Armenia

Posted : 17 April 2026

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has sent a formal congratulatory message to Rukayat Suleimon following her landmark achievement at the World Sambo Cup in Yerevan, Armenia. Suleimon secured a gold medal in the women’s 54kg category, making her the first female blind sambist in history to reach the top of the podium at a global event. The Governor expressed immense pride in the athlete for representing Lagos State and Nigeria with such distinction on the world stage.

The record-breaking performance occurred at the Gazprom Educational-Sports Complex during an international tournament sanctioned by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS). Suleimon was part of a pioneering group of female blind athletes competing at this elite level for the first time. In a statement released through his media aide, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu noted that her victory serves as a testament to Nigerian excellence and resilience.

Suleimon’s journey to the gold medal was marked by impressive victories over high-ranking opponents from across Asia. She began her campaign with a hard-fought 12–10 win against Kazakhstan’s Elnara Abdinazarova in her opening bout. In the final, she faced Charos Ortikova of Uzbekistan and dominated the match to finish with a 13–2 scoreline. The Lagos State judo champion also defeated a representative from Kyrgyzstan during her historic run.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that winning a gold medal during an international debut is an extraordinary feat that requires immense preparation. He described Suleimon as a role model for young girls and athletes with disabilities across the country. According to the Governor, her success proves that physical challenges cannot stop a determined individual from reaching the pinnacle of their profession. He reiterated that his administration remains committed to supporting athletes who bring international glory to the state.

The Nigeria Sambo Association has also hailed the result as a massive boost for the sport's growth in Africa. Vice President Sherif Hammed described the achievement as a historic breakthrough that will inspire more inclusive participation in martial arts. Suleimon’s triumph is expected to improve her global ranking and strengthen Nigeria's position in international sambo. The athlete has now shifted her focus toward the upcoming World Championships scheduled for later this year.
