Gooch, DeChambeau Lead LIV Golf South Korea After Strong First Round

Posted : 02 May 2025

Talor Gooch and Bryson DeChambeau are tied for the lead at 7 under after the opening round of LIV Golf South Korea on Friday at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon. DeChambeau, who was bogey-free throughout the round, sealed his spot at the top with a birdie on the final hole. Gooch, the 2023 individual champion, also had a strong round, making three consecutive birdies over an eight-hole stretch, showcasing his improving form after a tough start to the year.

Gooch's solid performance helped his team, Smash GC, to a one-shot lead in the team competition, posting a cumulative score of 10 under. The Brooks Koepka-led team sits ahead of DeChambeau’s Crushers GC by a single stroke. Reflecting on his start to the season, Gooch mentioned his game had been rusty, but the recent improvement in his performances has him hopeful for a strong finish to the year.

DeChambeau called his round "grueling" but attributed his success to a hot putter, compensating for what he described as shaky iron play. After sinking a 10-foot putt on the 18th hole, he expressed excitement for the weekend's competition, looking forward to the challenges ahead as he tries to maintain his position at the top.

South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen is tied for third after shooting a 66 on Thursday, with his Stinger GC team ranking fourth in the team standings. Richard Bland of England is also at 6 under, while LIV Mexico winner Joaquin Niemann of Chile, playing for Torque GC, is part of a four-way tie for fifth, two shots behind the leaders. Additionally, Dean Burmester and Marc Leishman each made holes-in-one during the round, adding to the excitement of the day.
