The organisers of the Golf for Peace initiative have announced plans to expand the tournament across Nigeria. Heartlink Events intends to use the sport to promote peace, charity, and social impact in various regions. This commitment follows the successful conclusion of the most recent edition held at the Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos.
The tournament featured a diverse field of approximately 120 golfers from across the country. Participants traveled from the IBB International Golf and Country Club and Cross Creek Golf Club. Players also represented regions including Bayelsa, Ibadan, Abeokuta, and the host city, Lagos.
In the competitive category, 11-year-old Toluwalashe Balogun stole the spotlight as the overall women’s winner. She secured her victory by returning a net score of 66 over 18 holes. In the men’s division, Abiodun Adesina claimed the top prize after finishing with a net score of 70.
Kemi Olowoyo-Otegbade, the convener of the initiative, explained that the event serves as a platform for dialogue and community building. She noted that the primary mission is to spread a message of love and unity through golf to all Nigerians. The organisers believe that promoting peace is a vital form of charity in the current social climate.
Looking toward the future, the organisers are currently evaluating new host locations. Potential sites for upcoming editions include Abeokuta, Ibadan, and Uyo. Olowoyo-Otegbade stated that the expansion depends on continued support from state governments and the golfing community.
Planning committee chairman Abimbola Ajinibi emphasized the tournament's role in addressing societal unrest without using force. He highlighted that the initiative encourages understanding and peaceful coexistence among citizens. This non-violent approach aims to tackle insecurity by fostering stronger interpersonal connections.
Lagos State officials also voiced their support for the tournament's objectives. Mobolaji Ogunlende, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, praised the event for acting as a powerful tool for progress. He remarked that such gatherings remind the public that sports can foster collective development beyond mere competition.
