Golden 7s Rugby Tournament Set to Ignite Ogun State

Posted : 24 July 2025

Ogun State, rapidly emerging as Nigeria’s newest hub of sporting excellence, is set to come alive once again as it hosts the thrilling Golden 7s Rugby Tournament — a dynamic youth and women’s rugby showcase — on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the iconic Recreation Club, GRA Ota.

Organized by the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) in collaboration with grassroots stakeholders, the one-day tournament brings together an exciting mix of raw talent, school spirit, and community pride from across the Southwest. It promises high-octane competition, talent discovery, and a deeper commitment to sport-driven development.

A true festival of rugby powerhouses, the women’s division will feature fierce matchups between Cowrie RFC, AJ Sharks RFC, and Golden Sharks RFC.

In the T1 Schools (Senior Boys) category, four schools will battle for supremacy: New Era School (Lagos), S.T.C (Lagos), Iganmode Grammar School (Ogun), and St. Michael African School (Ogun).

The Junior Female Teams division promises equally compelling action with teams from Ibudo Academy, Dorcas, Iganmode, Jubril Martin, and Ogun Young Stallion competing.

In the Junior Male category, fans can expect intense showdowns between Wolverine Academy, Ibudo Academy, Golden Sharks, Dorcas Cardoso, Catholic St. Michael African School, and Jubril Martin.

Speaking ahead of the event, Hussain Shakirat Wuraola, Nigeria Rugby Development Officer and tournament host, shared her excitement:

“We’re thrilled to host the Golden Rugby 7s as a platform to build confidence in our youth, promote teamwork, discipline, and leadership through sport.
It’s not just about competition—it’s about community impact and nurturing the next generation of rugby stars in Nigeria.”

The Golden 7s has earned praise as a vital platform for accelerating youth participation and rugby development in the Southwest. It brings together young talents from schools and academies, playing a crucial role in identifying future national rugby stars.

With its combination of competition and mentorship, the tournament promotes core values such as sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership. A standout element is its emphasis on gender inclusion, with boys and girls competing across multiple age groups — reflecting broader efforts to support female participation in sport and ensure equal development opportunities.

Additionally, the Golden 7s strengthens grassroots rugby structures, boosting local engagement and building sustainable systems for long-term talent development.

With the promise of an electrifying atmosphere, passionate supporters, and future champions on display, the Golden 7s is more than a tournament — it’s a movement that embodies the future of Nigerian rugby.
