French rider Dorian Godon produced a surprise victory in the opening prologue of the Tour de Romandie, finishing ahead of a strong field including world champion Tadej Pogacar. The short 3.2km course in Villars-sur-Glâne saw Godon clock 3 minutes 35 seconds, securing a six-second margin over Portugal’s Ivo Oliveira and Sweden’s Jakob Söderqvist.
Pogacar, widely regarded as the overall favourite for the week-long race, finished fifth, one second behind Godon’s closest challengers. The Slovenian rider, who recently won Liège–Bastogne–Liège for a fourth time, is using Romandie as his first stage race of the season after competing mainly in one-day events so far this year.
Despite not winning the prologue, Pogacar still gained slight time on some key rivals. Two-time former winner Primož Roglič finished eighth, while Florian Lipowitz and Lenny Martinez also trailed the leading group in the early standings.
The result sets up an intriguing opening week in Switzerland, with Pogacar expected to challenge strongly for the overall title. The first full road stage features a demanding 171km route with a steep climb late in the course that could provide the first major test between the general classification contenders.
