Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria confirms participation in 10 sports as Commonwealth Games countdown hits 22 days

Posted : 01 July 2026

With 22 days remaining until the start of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria has confirmed it will compete in 10 sports as preparations enter the final phase for the prestigious multi-sport competition.

The Games are scheduled to hold in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026, and will bring together about 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.

This year's edition will feature a streamlined programme of 10 sports, including six integrated Para sports, reinforcing the Games' commitment to inclusivity.

Nigeria's contingent will compete in Athletics, Basketball (3x3), Boxing, Judo, Para Athletics, Para Cycling, Para Powerlifting, Swimming, Weightlifting, and Wheelchair Basketball.

The National Sports Commission (NSC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the various national sports federations, has intensified preparations through national trials, technical training programmes, and planned local and overseas training camps to ensure the country's athletes are in peak condition.

Officials believe the comprehensive build-up will position Team Nigeria to challenge strongly across several events and continue the country's impressive record at the Commonwealth Games.

Nigeria has long been one of Africa's most successful nations at the Commonwealth Games, earning recognition for its consistent performances in athletics, boxing, weightlifting, and other disciplines.

The Glasgow 2026 Games offer another opportunity for the country's athletes to demonstrate their talent and compete for podium finishes.

The inclusion of integrated Para sports also highlights Nigeria's continued commitment to promoting equal opportunities for athletes with disabilities while strengthening the nation's drive for sporting excellence.

As the countdown continues, Team Nigeria has urged Nigerians both at home and abroad to support the athletes as they prepare to represent the country on one of the Commonwealth's biggest sporting stages.

The strategic confirmation of these 10 sporting disciplines marks a decisive milestone in Nigeria's quest for continental dominance at the global event. With robust administrative backing and a highly motivated contingent of able-bodied and Para athletes, the nation is positioned to turn intensive preparations into resounding podium success.
