Glasgow 2026: Dikko, Olopade Drive Team Nigeria's Quest for Commonwealth Games Success

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, and the Commission's Director-General, Bukola Olopade, have assumed key leadership roles as Team Nigeria begins its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The duo is spearheading Nigeria's participation at the Games, carrying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's charge for the country's athletes to excel and surpass previous performances on the Commonwealth stage.

President Tinubu's message was delivered to Team Nigeria during the official send-off ceremony in Abuja by the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who assured the athletes of the Federal Government's unwavering support.

He urged them to compete with courage and determination, expressing confidence in their ability to bring honour to the nation.

"Go out there, win medals, and wait for a grateful nation to reward you. The President is solidly behind you. He wants you to make Nigeria proud by winning laurels," Gbajabiamila told the contingent.

The President's Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Hon. Sunday Dare, also reaffirmed the administration's expectations, stressing that the mission in Glasgow is to improve on Nigeria's outing at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

He charged Olopade, who is serving as Nigeria's Chef de Mission, to remain focused and ensure that the athletes receive the support required to achieve podium finishes.

While Dikko is leading Nigeria's participation in Commonwealth Games Federation and ministerial meetings, representing the country's interests at the highest administrative and policy levels, Olopade is overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Nigerian delegation, including the welfare of athletes and officials.

With Team Nigeria fully settled in the Games Village and competitions already underway, the NSC expressed confidence that thorough preparations, improved athlete welfare, and strong government backing would translate into an impressive medal haul.

Nigeria is represented by 72 athletes competing in 10 sports: athletics, 3x3 basketball, judo, boxing, track cycling, weightlifting, swimming, para powerlifting, 3x3 wheelchair basketball, and para athletics.

With strong administrative leadership and sustained government support, Team Nigeria will be aiming to build on its Commonwealth Games legacy in Glasgow. The delegation hopes its preparations and athlete-focused approach will produce another successful outing and an improved medal tally.
